Victoria Falls River Lodge: Riverbank or Town for the Falls?

For three or four nights of game drives, Zambezi sunsets and afternoons back at your room, Victoria Falls River Lodge makes sense. It sits inside Zambezi National Park, upstream of the Falls, about ten minutes from town. If you have just one or two nights and mainly want to photograph the waterfall, stay in town.
My assessment comes from hotel information and published rate cards. I have not stayed here or obtained a live quote. The lodge rate includes all meals, local drinks, return airport transfers and two specified activities per person per day, so compare it with a town stay on that basis. National park entrance, conservation and heritage fees cost extra, as does rainforest admission at the Falls. Those amounts still need checking.
Leave an afternoon for the room and riverbank
The riverbank outside the rooms is what makes me want to give this lodge more time. An official photograph shows an elephant beyond a villa’s sliding doors. The lodge’s sales manager also mentioned elephants drinking from a room’s plunge pool in an email. Look closely at the photograph; just leave the encounter off any confirmed itinerary.
Every suite has a private deck and plunge pool. In the luxury tent accommodation, white mosquito nets hang over the bed, with glass doors opening towards riverside loungers. Fill every day with departures and you may barely use the outdoor space you spent so long comparing.
The mainland tents combine canvas, glass and timber beneath thatched roofs, with air conditioning inside. Open-plan bathrooms have freestanding baths and indoor and outdoor showers. Start here if you like the appearance of a tent but want a full bathroom and private pool. After a game drive, leave an afternoon for the deck and have your meals at the lodge.

Give sunset to the Zambezi
The sunset cruise is the activity I would put in first. Drinks and canapés are served aboard, and from midriver you can look downstream towards the spray from the Falls. It gives the river its own place in the trip, beyond the visit to the waterfall.
The daily allowance is specific: one game drive plus one river cruise per person. Drives run in the morning or afternoon; cruises at sunrise or sunset. Extra outings cost extra. Pair a sunset cruise with a morning drive and there is room to return to your deck between them.
For the Falls, the daily town transfer typically leaves at 10:00 and returns at 15:00. Rainforest admission is at your own expense. Put those transfer times into the itinerary before arranging the rest of the day. If you want longer at the Falls, arrange a separate vehicle. A town hotel is easier if you want to come and go independently every day.

Couples can consider the island; families start with eligibility
Consider the Island Treehouse Suites on Kandahar Island if arriving and leaving by boat appeals. Raised wooden walkways lead through palms to the suites, and the island has butler service. Each suite accommodates a maximum of two guests aged 12 years and older. This suits time on the river better than frequent trips into town.
The Starbed Treehouses add a rooftop open-air bed and telescope, with the same minimum age of 12. If that bed is part of the reason for coming, book the category that includes it. Do not leave it to an upgrade request at arrival.
For children aged 4–17, look at Luxury Family Tents or Superior Family Tents. The Luxury Tents rate card marks sharing children as not applicable and provides no child sharing rate. Establish which category accommodates your family before comparing seasons.
For friends or several generations travelling together, Hippo Creek Villa has two king or twin suites plus a family suite. It also has a private lounge, dining area, chef’s kitchen and dedicated butler, with a plunge pool on each deck. That gives everyone somewhere to eat and gather while retaining separate sleeping spaces.

Choose the waterfall conditions before the seasonal rate
If a broad curtain of water is the reason for travelling, choose dates around flood season. The lodge identifies February to May as that period, when spray can rise above 400 metres. Start with those dates before considering the green-season rate.
The lodge describes September to January as the dry, clear-water months, when wildlife gathers around the river. Local guides identify October and November as the lowest-water period. Water still runs on the Zimbabwean side, while the Zambian side opposite can reduce to bare rock. That timing can suit game viewing, cruises and a riverbank stay. For the full-flood waterfall, change the dates.
Green season begins on 1 November 2026. For two adults and an 8-year-old sharing a Luxury Family Tent, the published VAT-inclusive rates calculate to US$2,048 for one night, including accommodation, meals and daily activities for all three. This is a rate-card calculation, not a live quote; the applicable green-season window runs through 14 December 2026. Confirm which activities the child can join before paying.
Confirm the child’s game drive before paying
The park holds elephant, lion, buffalo and leopard, alongside zebra, giraffe and kudu, but no resident wild rhino. An official photograph shows a bull elephant passing the game viewer beside a baobab. Booking a family room does not confirm the family’s activity arrangements.
Specialist safari operators describe standard drives as suitable from age 8, with dedicated outings for ages 4–7. Younger children in that band need a private vehicle to join regular morning or afternoon drives. Children aged 3 and under cannot join drives or boat cruises. These are operator descriptions, not a published lodge policy. Obtain written confirmation for your child’s age, departure and any private-vehicle charge before paying.
The area has year-round malaria transmission risk, with greater mosquito exposure in green season. Consult a travel doctor about preventive medication before departure.
Ask separately about a snare patrol. The lodge supports anti-poaching work, but this activity appears on neither its included nor its extra-charge activity list. A room enquiry does not establish availability.
Virtuoso bookings at the public rate add a US$100-equivalent hotel credit. It cannot offset room charges, be combined or be redeemed for cash if unused. Villa bookings also include a 50-minute couples massage per room, once per stay. Upgrades, early check-in and late check-out remain subject to availability.
Send your dates, party size and children’s ages to Jay, your Virtuoso advisor. He can make sure the confirmation spells out breakfast, benefits, the cancellation deadline and prepayment requirements. If you specifically want a treehouse or family room, book that category.

All figures here are the lodge’s published 2026 rack rates, VAT included, quoted per person per night sharing and inclusive of all meals and two game activities per person per day. No live rate pull was made for this article; actual pricing is subject to enquiry. National park entrance, conservation and heritage fees, and rainforest entry at the Falls, are not included in the rate. Children’s age rules for game drives and cruises come from specialist trade sources, as the lodge does not publish a children’s policy page; written confirmation is obtained before booking. Seasonal water levels and wildlife information were checked against the lodge’s own site and public sources as of October 2026. Images courtesy of the lodge’s official library.
