The Samling: A 12-Room Hotel Above Windermere Worth Two Nights of Your England Trip

Most Lake District itineraries are about Beatrix Potter and walking. Where to stay gets far less thought, and this is the hotel I would mention first.

The Samling has just 12 rooms. It sits 350 feet above Windermere on 67 acres that belong entirely to the hotel — the whole hillside and its woodland sit inside the property line. The hotel’s own line is that one of England’s loveliest lakes is at the bottom of the garden. Each of the 12 rooms is named after a place in the Lakes. And there is a sentence on the website I like: you can book a room, or you can book the whole hotel.

Their words: a luxury hotel in the countryside, not a country-house hotel

The English countryside does not lack heavy curtains, tartan and paintings of shotguns. This place goes the other way: the house is old, the interiors are clean and modern. “Service so good you barely notice it” is another of their own lines, and having stayed, I would not call it a boast.

Rooms

The suites are on two levels — bedroom upstairs, sitting room downstairs — with an Emperor or super-king bed, goose-down pillows and duvets, a marble bathroom and Lalique toiletries. The suite tier is the one with lake views.

The Classic rooms are the smallest tier, but there is nothing standard-issue about them: en-suite bathroom, woodland or garden views, Sky TV, tea and coffee. Parking and VAT are already in the rate. Two guests per room, maximum.

The restaurant: a Michelin star, held for a third year in the 2026 guide

Every table faces the lake through floor-to-ceiling glass. The kitchen cooks with herbs and vegetables from its own garden. Breakfast can be sent up to the room.

Two things to settle before you book

  • The rate is prepaid, and free cancellation ends 14 days before arrival. If your dates might move, do not book yet.
