The Samling: Borrowing a Home in the English Countryside
A Country House, Just for a While
Some holiday wishes sound suspiciously like a property search: a garden, somewhere to walk, dinner nearby, and permission to imagine you live there. The Samling fits that particular daydream. It sits 350 feet above Windermere, within 67 acres of woodland, fields and landscaped gardens. A walk around the estate could be the afternoon’s entire plan.
The house dates to 1780, and its public rooms were restored in 2017. There are 12 rooms, each named after a place in the Lakes. Before learning the names, I have a more useful question: how much time would you actually want to spend on this hillside? The itinerary can wait. The woods, gardens and grassy slopes are already there.
The appeal is personal. After enough photographs of English country houses, perhaps you want to inhabit one for a while, with the garden included in your holiday. Somewhere to wander, somewhere to come back to. That is enough to start checking dates.
An Old House with Room to Breathe
White walls, timber and large windows give the interiors a lightness that suits the old house. Your eye has somewhere to go beyond the furniture. If you love historic buildings but want rooms that feel easy to live in, this is a persuasive combination.
You can book a room or take the whole hotel. That latter option gives the country-house daydream a fairly concrete shape. Even with a room booking, you can imagine an ordinary rhythm: rest upstairs, sit in the lounge, head out for a walk on the estate.
Look at the photographs with that rhythm in mind. Where would you read? Where would you sit and talk? Using those spaces is what could make the house feel like a temporary home.
Book the Suite for the Morning, Too
There is a practical reason to book a Suite: lake views belong to this category. Four of the 12 rooms are suites, arranged over two levels, with the bedroom upstairs and a sitting room below. If Windermere is what brings you here, book the Suite.
The downstairs space deserves attention of its own. Breakfast can be delivered to the room, and the sitting area gives you somewhere to remain afterwards. Discuss where to go, or postpone going anywhere. We spend a remarkable amount of time choosing hotel beds and rather less choosing where to sit after breakfast. Here, that second decision matters.
Emperor or Super-King beds, goose-down pillows and duvets, marble bathrooms and Lalique amenities take care of the comforts. The extra space earns its place when you actually want to spend part of the day in your room.
The Classic Room looks towards woodland or gardens. It has an en-suite bathroom, Sky TV, tea and coffee facilities, and a maximum occupancy of two guests. For days driving through the Lakes and evenings back at the hotel, it makes sense. Woodland and garden views have their own appeal. Choose around the days you want to have.
Give Dinner a Place in the Itinerary
The Samling’s restaurant holds one Michelin star, retained for a third year in the 2026 guide. Every table faces Windermere through floor-to-ceiling windows. Book dinner first. Then decide how far to venture during the day.
By daylight, you can watch the changing colour of the water; in the evening, the lights on the far shore. Even with a Classic Room, you have this setting at the table. Knowing where dinner will be also removes a decision from the day’s sightseeing. Returning to the hotel becomes something to anticipate.
Herbs and vegetables come from the hotel’s own garden, and the menu follows the season. The garden contributes to dinner as well as the afternoon’s walk. When choosing dates, it is easy to think only about how the trees and lake might look. Here, what the kitchen might be cooking is part of the interest.
Dinner can be an occasion. Breakfast can be more informal. Room service leaves space for a slower start.
Include the Breakfast You Already Want
On the dates I checked, public and advisor-only rates matched for both Classic Room and Suite. At the same price, take the benefits. These include full breakfast for two daily, in the restaurant or delivered to your room, plus a dining credit. With dinner already planned at the hotel, the credit supports something you intended to do.
VAT and parking are included. A stay on the estate can sit comfortably alongside days exploring the Lakes by car. You can enjoy the hotel without spending the entire holiday in your room.
Consider Your Companions Before Your Room
The Samling does not accept children under ten, either overnight or in the restaurant. There is one restaurant and one lounge, and reception is not staffed overnight. For young children, extensive facilities or nightlife, look elsewhere.
The advisor-only rate difference between Classic Room and Suite was £480 on the dates I checked. If you already know you want to see the lake from your room, put the budget into the Suite. An upgrade should not be responsible for delivering that wish.
Before booking, confirm whether the dining credit applies to that evening’s tasting menu. Settle that detail beforehand, so dinner can have your attention.
Leave Two Nights, and Settle the Details
A honeymoon, an anniversary or simply two nights beyond London could bring you here. If your companion enjoys walking and eating together, with time to sit separately too, the holiday already has something to it.
