The Plaza Before Closure: Stay a Few Nights or Book Tea?

Breakfast helps make the case for staying at The Plaza. If you want to bring your parents to the Palm Court for tea and spend your mornings at the hotel, consider a few nights. If you mainly want to see the stained-glass dome, reserve afternoon tea. Based on hotel information and the rates checked, my choice would be the start of the festive season, particularly for families happy with queen beds. I have not stayed here.

The last window returning accommodation rates was November 11–14, 2026. Later dates sampled returned none and need a direct enquiry. Operations will pause from January 2027 for at least four years; the exact closing date remains unannounced. For Christmas or New Year, confirm rooms and event reservations separately before planning the trip around a package.

Stay if you want breakfast here, too

The Palm Court gives afternoon tea a setting to plan around. Its stained-glass dome echoes the 1907 original, above ceiling-high palms and furniture with trellis detailing. In the photograph, a tiered tea stand sits beneath the chandeliers. On a New York trip with parents, I would leave an afternoon for that table before adding another sightseeing stop.

There are 25 Palais des Thés teas. Holiday afternoon tea runs through January 12, 2027, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., across three seatings. Choose the sitting before arranging the rest of that day. Cancellation is allowed three days ahead; cancellations within 72 hours and no-shows incur a US$75 per-person charge.

Holiday dining reservations open 90 days ahead for registered guests and 60 days ahead for the public. A room booking does not reserve tea. Currently, only hotel guests can make confirmed Palm Court breakfast reservations. Plaza Virtuoso rates generally include daily breakfast for two and a hotel credit; I will check which breakfast venues apply before booking.

For flexible dates, decorations begin November 11 and the tree lighting is November 12. The stay window that returned rates covers both, so that is where I would start.

Start with queen beds; choose a suite for a specific reason

Leave time to use the room. The photographed corner has a gilded headboard, crystal chandelier and sitting area beside the window. The bathroom continues that decorative approach with a freestanding tub. Hotel descriptions specify mosaic floors and 24-carat gold-plated Sherle Wagner fixtures. If that appeals, breakfast at the hotel may take precedence over another reservation across town.

According to the hotel, every guest room has a sitting area and an oversized bathroom. The Deluxe King checked measures 550 square feet and allows a rollaway; the Deluxe Two Queens measures 600 square feet. Start with the latter if the beds suit you. Its advisor-only total was also lower than the king offer checked.

Checked on October 21, 2026, for arrival November 11 and departure November 14, 2026, the Deluxe Two Queens Virtuoso 3rd Night Free rate totalled US$7,113.52, including tax, for three nights, one room and two adults. The standard refundable offers checked required no prepayment, with cancellation due two days before arrival.

The final fee treatment still needs confirmation. The public offer separately listed an urban experience fee; the advisor offer’s breakdown did not list it separately. That does not establish a waiver. When I re-price your dates, I will compare the advisor, public and promotional offers and make sure the confirmation states the applicable benefits and payment terms.

Consider the Pulitzer Fifth Avenue Suite for butler service, or the duplex, one-bedroom Penthouse Suite for its large private terrace. If the aim is simply somewhere for the family to sit and rest, the ordinary guest rooms already have sitting areas.

Choose the film outing or Christmas in the suite

For children who know Home Alone, the package offers a four-hour private limousine outing linking the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, Central Park, Carnegie Hall and Radio City. Back in the room comes a sixteen-scoop sundae. My first booking question would still be the bed arrangement. Working out how to approach the sundae can follow.

The package is available year-round, requires booking at least three days ahead and must be booked directly with the hotel. These arrangements are not included in an ordinary room reservation. If the film outing is the reason for travelling, verify the package separately before choosing accommodation.

Suitest Season of All is for families who want the decorations in their own room. A seven-foot Christmas tree comes with lights and decorative bows, alongside festive flowers and a welcome amenity. That is a concrete reason to book a suite if you plan to gather there.

This public package covers stays from November 12, 2026, to January 6, 2027, with booking through December 26, 2026. It requires a one-night deposit at booking and cancellation 30 days before arrival. Leave it aside while plans remain unsettled. Its advertised dates still require a separate accommodation availability check.

For a Central Park South address, compare the Ritz-Carlton

If restaurants and performances need more room in the budget, compare The Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park. Checked on October 21, 2026, its Virtuoso Deluxe Room totalled US$4,999.82, including tax, for November 11–14, 2026: three nights, one room and two adults. It included daily American breakfast for two and a US$100 incidental credit per stay.

This offer requires three nights. Shorten the stay and the entire booking is recalculated. A one-category upgrade, early check-in and late check-out are subject to availability. The room is smaller than the Plaza entry category checked.

The park-facing room pictured in the hotel material has a brass telescope by the window, with Central Park’s canopy beyond. If that view matters, confirm the specific view category. Do not expect it from the Deluxe Room quotation.

Settle the reservation that brings you here before paying

The city’s Department of Buildings has classified the Plaza façade as unsafe, and sidewalk sheds will affect the exterior. This winter is a poor fit for an unobstructed façade photograph or expectations of newly finished rooms. The New York Times reported that the Palm Court and event rooms would also close. That is a media report; the exact closing date still awaits announcement.

Anyone holding a 2027 room, wedding or event reservation should address the existing contract first. At the rate-check date, no uniform refund or rescheduling policy had been publicly announced. Seek written cancellation confirmation, the deposit refund amount and timetable, and revised terms for replacement venues or wedding suppliers.
