The Langham, Custom House, Bangkok: The Siam’s Team, an 1888 Landmark, and an Advisor Rate Below the Public One
Bangkok’s riverside has a new address worth planning a trip around. On 20 December 2026 the city’s 1888 Custom House — once Siam’s gateway to the world — reopens as The Langham, Custom House, Bangkok: 60 rooms and 15 suites, two private piers, and a team that will be familiar to anyone who has stayed at The Siam.
Why I am paying attention: the people
The hotel put it in writing to me on 9 September: General Manager Nick Downing and Director of Sales Khun Tarn both come from The Siam, along with the Head Butler and the reservations team. If you know The Siam’s brand of quiet, personal service, that is the standard they are bringing across the river. A CV is not a track record, though: nobody has tested the new hotel’s service yet.
The building
The story starts with the Bowring Treaty of 1855 and Siam’s opening to trade. The Palladian Custom House, designed by the Italian architect Joachim Grassi, went into service in 1888 and spent six decades as the country’s front door — and one of Bangkok’s grandest venues; the 1907 reception for King Chulalongkorn’s return from Europe was held here. It became a protected national monument in 2002.
The restoration does not pretend the last century never happened. The heritage buildings become the social heart — restaurants, bars, the Heritage Ballroom — while every room sits in a new curved wing by Thai architect Smith Obayawat, its shape borrowed from the river. He calls the pair “the grandfather and the grandson”.
Rooms
All 75 keys are in the new wing. The Classic Collection starts at 40 sqm over courtyards, garden walls or the city skyline, with 55 sqm Courtyard rooms that add a private terrace; the River View Collection (36–52 sqm) puts a balcony over the Chao Phraya; the Pool Terrace Collection (70–76 sqm) adds a private terrace and plunge pool; and three Specialty Suites — Pool House, Trading House and Custom House — are furnished from the owner’s private collection. Bathrooms are brushed-metal capsules, a nod to Thai gold leaf, with etching drawn from temple mosaics.
Eating, drinking, wellness
- T’ang Court — the Bangkok outpost of the three-Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant at The Langham, Hong Kong
- A riverfront destination bar in the Southern Building, reaching out to one of the two private piers, with indoor, terrace and rooftop seating
- Chuan Spa, and a gym with Asia’s first Technogym Sandstone collection plus a private Pilates studio
- A pool with six cabanas and dive-in cinema nights
- On foot: the Charoen Krung creative district, Talad Noi, Warehouse 30, Assumption Cathedral; 10–20 minutes by boat or car to ICONSIAM, Sathorn Pier and Chinatown

Opening week, 20–23 December, returns exactly the same numbers, and the gap holds on every category: Deluxe River THB 137,179 vs 130,117, Deluxe Pool Terrace 195,441 vs 188,379, Classic Suite 195,441 vs 188,379. The advisor rate cancels free until the day before arrival and takes no prepayment. There is also a public advance-purchase rate at THB 90,093, but it excludes breakfast, is paid up front and can only be cancelled until 45 days before arrival — different terms, so compare more than the number.
Virtuoso amenities
On top of the lower rate, per the hotel’s letter of 9 September 2026:
- USD 100 hotel credit per room, per stay (not valid on spa retail or at Roi Chak Sam)
- Upgrade to the next category at time of booking, subject to availability (suites and Specialty Suites excluded)
- Daily breakfast for two, in the restaurant or in-room
- Welcome cocktails for two at Crowntail River Bar
- Early check-in and late check-out, subject to availability
- One-way limousine transfer within Bangkok for Pool Terrace rooms and standard suites; round-trip for the Specialty Suites
The opening package, priced honestly
The hotel’s inaugural-season package, The Grand Arrival (stays 20 December 2026 – 31 March 2027), starts at THB 131,888++ for three nights in a Classic room — roughly THB 155,232 with tax and service. It adds a signature dinner for two, a 60-minute Chuan treatment for two, The Langham Afternoon Tea, a private heritage tour of the Custom House, a vintage portrait, round-trip airport limousine and a Langham Service Stylist; the suite version starts at THB 248,888++ with Bentley transfers.
That is THB 55,128 more than the advisor rate. If you would use all of it, it is fair value; if not, it is an expensive way to buy dinner.
Three things before you book
- It opens on 20 December. Nobody has tested the service yet; if you want certainty, look at February onwards.
- The advisor rate takes no prepayment and cancels free until the day before arrival.
- Rates and amenities are subject to the hotel’s confirmation on the day.
