Bangkok’s Old Custom House Has a Dinner Date

Dinner at a former gateway to Siam gives a trip to Bangkok something to look forward to. Where goods and travellers once passed through customs, people will come to eat, drink and take a holiday. An old building with a daily life is more inviting than one admired from behind a railing.

Opened in 1888, the Custom House is scheduled to return on 20 December 2026 as The Langham, Custom House, Bangkok. The yellow recovered beneath layers of paint will remain on the Charoen Krung riverbank. The appeal is simple: somewhere with a past, for a few comfortable, ordinary days.

A New Everyday Life at the Old Gateway

The story begins with the Bowring Treaty of 1855. Italian architect Joachim Grassi designed the Palladian Custom House, which later hosted the reception for King Chulalongkorn’s return from Europe. It became a protected national monument in 2002.

The restaurants, bars and Heritage Ballroom will occupy the heritage buildings. All the bedrooms go into the new wing. That gives the old house a reason for people to settle in; a meal becomes a way of getting to know it.

Architect Smith Obayawat took the new wing’s curves from the Chao Phraya. He calls the buildings grandfather and grandson. It is an affectionate description. Even the architecture has acquired a family.

Choose the Room Around Your Afternoon

The room shapes the other half of the holiday. The new wing’s 60 rooms and 15 suites offer a choice between a base for exploring Bangkok and somewhere that might persuade you to leave an afternoon free.

The Classic Collection looks onto courtyards, garden walls or the city skyline. Courtyard rooms add a private terrace. These are sensible choices for days spent out in the city. If the river is the reason for coming, look directly at the River View Collection: balconies face the Chao Phraya, with the shipping lane below.

Boats cut through the water, and the skyline across the river lights up toward evening. For that kind of afternoon, I’d choose Pool Terrace. A private terrace and plunge pool make watching boats a perfectly respectable plan. Occasionally, my itinerary should be allowed to have very little on it.

If furniture interests you more than a plunge pool, consider the Specialty Suites: Pool House, Trading House and Custom House. Pieces from the owner’s private collection give you old objects to enjoy as part of the room.

The Bathroom Changes the Style

The brushed-metal capsule inside the bedroom invites a second look. It is the bathroom, with a freestanding tub inside and diamond etching drawn from temple patterns on its exterior.

Thai gold-leaf craft inspired the design. After the Palladian house, this contemporary intervention feels like an author changing prose styles. You can still recognise Thailand in the writing.

Leave Some Time After Dinner

T’ang Court will occupy the heritage building. The Bangkok outpost of the three-Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant at The Langham, Hong Kong already has an enticing setting. Dinner inside the old Custom House is reason enough to make an evening of it.

The riverfront bar is in the Southern Building, with indoor, terrace and rooftop seating and access to a private pier. Sit before or after dinner, watching the boats and the lights across the river. Leave a gap before the next reservation.

Days at the hotel have other possibilities. The new wing holds Chuan Spa, a gym and a private Pilates studio. Outdoor films are planned beside the pool after dark.

For a walk, put the Charoen Krung creative district, Talad Noi, Warehouse 30 and Assumption Cathedral on the itinerary. The two private piers offer water routes to consider for ICONSIAM, Sathorn Pier and Chinatown. Staying by the river can also mean travelling along it.

Familiar Colleagues, a New Address

In its letter dated 9 September 2026, the hotel says its general manager, director of sales, head butler and reservations team are coming from The Siam.

That adds substance to the appeal of the building. Colleagues arriving together already have experience of working with one another. For a hotel that encourages you to spend time in it, the people looking after everyday life matter.

Breakfast Belongs in the Comparison

On the dates I checked, the public breakfast-inclusive rate for Classic 40 sqm was 107,166 baht. The advisor-only rate for the same room was 100,104 baht, with additional benefits. That comparison matters if a leisurely hotel breakfast is part of your holiday.

Booked through Virtuoso, this rate includes daily breakfast for two in the restaurant or in-room, plus welcome cocktails for two at Crowntail River Bar. A hotel credit applies per room, per stay, excluding spa retail and Roi Chak Sam.

The public advance-purchase rate was lower but excluded breakfast. Choose around how you actually eat. Count the credit only against spending you already intended.

Give the House Time to Tell Its Story

For a more settled stay, look at February onward. Even familiar colleagues need time to learn a new building.

What interests me in The Grand Arrival is the private Custom House tour. Hear the house’s history, then sit down to dinner inside it.

The package also includes dinner for two, a 60-minute Chuan SPA treatment for two, Langham afternoon tea, a vintage portrait, round-trip airport limousine transfers and a dedicated Service Stylist. The suite version upgrades the transfers to a Bentley.

Consider it if those arrangements suit the holiday you want. If you simply want the river, leave the time for the terrace.

Put the Holiday You Want into the Booking

This suits a return to Bangkok for old buildings and riverside evenings. Once you have chosen the outlook, I will re-price your dates and party size, compare advisor, public and promotional rates, and pass your view requests to the hotel before booking.
