“Upgraded” Is Not “Guaranteed”: The Room Ladder at Sindhorn Kempinski Bangkok

Going back and forth with a Bangkok hotel on a client’s behalf, I ended up with a table I think everyone who books hotels should see once.

The request was simple: a suite with a separate living room at the Sindhorn Kempinski. The sales office’s first answer was the one every traveler has heard — “there’s an upgrade.” It sounds settled. It is not, until you ask one more question: is that guaranteed, or subject to availability on the day?

The hotel’s answer, in writing

This is the hotel’s upgrade ladder. These upgrades are guaranteed and confirmed at the time of booking:

  • Grand Deluxe Room → Grand Premier Room
  • Grand Premier Room → Executive Club Room
  • Executive Club Room → Executive Suite
  • Two-Bedroom Grand Executive Suite → Two-Bedroom Premier Suite
Grand Premier Room: book this tier and the guaranteed upgrade lands you in an Executive Club Room, not a suite
Grand Premier Room: book this tier and the guaranteed upgrade lands you in an Executive Club Room, not a suite

See the trap? Book a Grand Premier and your guaranteed upgrade lands you in an Executive Club Room — a nicer room, still not a suite. If the goal is the Executive Suite with its own living room, the lowest tier you can book is the Executive Club Room.

And the wording is clear: this upgrade is confirmed the moment you book. It does not depend on what is open when you arrive.

Executive Club Room: the minimum tier if a suite is the goal

Two very different meanings of “upgrade”

Guaranteed upgradeWritten into the reservation. The ladder is fixed, and you can hold the hotel to the email.Subject to availabilityThe front desk gives it only if something is open that day. In high season that is usually nothing — and nobody has broken a promise.

The same sentence, “we’ll upgrade you,” can mean either. They are a full room category and a good deal of money apart. When you ask a hotel, ask the two questions separately; the answers will not be the same.

The hotel itself deserves a word

In 2026 it took first place for hotel spa in Asia-Pacific from Travel + Leisure and made Tatler’s 20 best hotels in Thailand. Families get a Sealife Family Suite. And it sits beside Lumphini Park.
