Book the Hotel You Love, and the Holiday You Have in Mind

Make Room for What You Want to Do

You have picked the room. You would like breakfast at the hotel, and a spa treatment is on your mind. At this point, room photographs can take you only so far. Look at how those plans might fit into the booking.

Same hotel, same room category, same night: booking through a Virtuoso advisor typically includes daily breakfast for two and a hotel credit at the hotel’s public rate. The room rate is not raised to cover those benefits.

When the totals including tax match, that rate makes sense for someone who wants to spend time at the hotel. You have chosen somewhere you like. Include what you want to do there in the decision.

Credentials Should Have a Job to Do

When choosing an advisor, ask practical questions. If you are traveling with your parents, what should the hotel know ahead of time? How should a late arrival be explained? The answers tell you more than a string of titles.

I have worked as a luxury travel advisor for five years. Every August, I attend Virtuoso’s annual global conference in Las Vegas and meet hotel general managers and directors of sales. Those relationships should translate into something useful for your trip.

Before booking, I pass arrival-time and room requests to the hotel. With parents joining you, getting those details across early can leave fewer loose ends to think about before departure. The holiday has yet to begin. The advisor already has work to do.

Put the Essentials in the Reservation

If you want a suite, book a suite. If a view or connecting rooms matter, address them while choosing the room. Settle what you can at booking so you can turn your attention to the holiday.

Tell me about honeymoon arrangements, a birthday, New Year’s Eve or a trip with your parents before booking. I pass the relevant room and celebration requests to the hotel’s sales contact, giving the hotel advance notice of what needs attention.

I have specific sales contacts at close to 800 hotels. This is where that contact list becomes useful. Connecting rooms may be central to traveling together; the view may be the reason you picked the hotel. A room category alone does not explain why either matters to you.

During peak periods and for popular room categories, get the essential booking right first. Then ask for the extras you hope for. Paying for what you know you want leaves less hanging over the trip.

Benefits Need Somewhere to Go

A hotel credit has a purpose when you plan to dine or book a spa treatment there. Daily breakfast for two is useful when breakfast at the hotel was already the plan. Rearranging a holiday to use a benefit gets things backward.

A resort can be a reason to leave room in the itinerary. Dining, spa treatments, afternoon tea: choose what appeals to you. Every day does not have to be planned around going out.

Hotels use the advisor channel to build lasting guest relationships and typically offer daily breakfast and a hotel credit. Choose according to how you like to travel. Inclusions that fit your plans matter more than a long list.

Late-Night Planning Can Keep Going

For Luxury Hotels, I Favor the Advisor Channel

For luxury hotels, especially stays of two nights or more, the advisor channel is my choice. Breakfast and hotel credit have practical uses. Loyalty benefits remain, and I can pass family room requests and celebration details to the hotel before booking.

Four nights at Capella Bangkok over New Year, with a gala dinner included, makes the point concrete. If that is where you want to spend New Year’s Eve, the dinner becomes a reason to choose that rate.

For mid-range chains, price-led searches or plans that keep changing, the hotel’s website or an online booking site is a better fit. I am not a 24-hour instant-reply service. Please allow time for anything that needs a conversation.

Bring Your Dates and Your Requests

For self-service bookings, your credit card guarantees the reservation and is not charged at booking. Cancellation terms and deadlines appear at the bottom of each rate card. I request and follow up on upgrades, early check-in and late check-out; all remain subject to hotel arrangements and availability. Before booking, tell me your arrival time, room requirements and any celebration plans. Alongside the room, write down how you hope to spend the holiday.
