Let the Holiday Have a Little Theatre

A European ski holiday can carry a romantic wish list. You might want time on the slopes and a house that belongs in a fairy tale. Christmas together matters, but so does giving everyone a holiday they actually want. Airelles in the French Alps makes sense for that kind of choice.

On December 4, 2026, both hotels reopen, and the Three Valleys lifts start turning. Courchevel puts the story into its architecture. Val d’Isère takes you straight onto the slopes. If this is the year you swap Japan for Europe, you can change more than the destination. You can change the shape of the holiday.

Courchevel: Give the House Some Time

The romance of Les Airelles Courchevel is quite specific. Its exterior draws on a 19th-century Austro-Hungarian fairy-tale castle. Beneath the pointed turrets, beamed ceilings, stained glass and European antiques continue the story indoors. This is a house to look around slowly. I would leave some space in the itinerary simply to take it in.

In Courchevel 1850, the hotel has direct access to the Three Valleys ski area. Those who want a full day of skiing can have it. Those ready to return earlier have somewhere they may actively want to spend the afternoon. Everyone can follow their own plans and meet again for dinner.

La Table des Airelles, Matsuhisa and Palladio are in the hotel. Staying in for dinner can be an evening’s plan in itself. There is a pleasure in choosing somewhere that gives the people coming back early as much reason to be there as the people still skiing.

For a larger family gathering, look into the fir forest at Les Chalets des Airelles, with six to nine bedrooms each. Getting everyone together can take some arranging. Sharing a chalet lets that time extend beyond the dinner table, while leaving the daytime free for separate plans. Togetherness can feel less scheduled.

Val d’Isère: Go Skiing, Then Enjoy Coming Back

Airelles Val d’Isère has a more active appeal. True ski-in, ski-out access connects directly to 300 km of pistes. Choose it when skiing is the main purpose of the trip. With gloves, helmets and skis to take out each day, direct access is a convenience you can use repeatedly. It belongs near the top of the decision.

Coming back has its attractions too. Leave time for Airelles Spa by Guerlain, then pick dinner from La Grande Ourse, Palladio, Matsuhisa and Le Piaf. A serious day on the slopes and a leisurely evening can belong to the same holiday. You do not have to give the entire day over to skiing just because that brought you here.

Chalet Schuss gives a gathering more of a private-home setting. Its four en-suite bedrooms come with a private chef and butler, plus an outdoor Norwegian hot tub. When imagining a family holiday, it is easy to concentrate on everyone being together. When choosing the accommodation, give equal thought to being able to retreat to your own room. Privacy belongs in the plan.

Children Can Have a Different Programme

Courchevel’s indoor castle gives children something to build a holiday story around away from the slopes. There is also a teen room and a children’s pool in the spa, with ice skating and dog-sledding at the door. If the children want a change of activity, the adults can change pace with them. Choose Courchevel when enthusiasm for skiing varies across the family.

Val d’Isère has a Junior Ski Club and a teen games area. If everyone is looking forward to getting onto the slopes, put the holiday here. Start with what your children already enjoy. That is a firmer basis for choosing than imagining what they ought to like once they arrive. The activities should fit the family coming on the trip.

First, Check the Space That Lets You Stay Together

The availability sheet sent by the hotels on September 1 already marked Christmas week and the February break as limited. Check suitable accommodation early if you want to gather everyone together. Treat that sheet as a starting point; current availability still needs confirming.

At that point, Val d’Isère listed suites and apartments for December 19–26 and after January 2. Chalet Schuss listed December 19–26 and three full weeks in February. Courchevel listed suites over the February break.
