Adults Can Want a Treehouse, Too

A glass room suspended among the trees, with a private pool on the terrace. That is enough to make an adult take the question of annual leave seriously. One&Only Mandarina puts this particular treehouse in the tropical rainforest of Riviera Nayarit. Beyond the canopy is the sea.

The treehouse of the imagination usually involves a few compromises. Here, even the angle of the ocean view deserves consideration. The holiday can begin with choosing the room: how high you want to be in the canopy, how much sea you want beyond the terrace, and how much time you want to spend there. Those are useful decisions to make before filling the calendar.

Be Particular About the Terrace

Casa Atura makes the case for coming here quite clearly. The all-glass room sits among the trees. From the bed, your eye moves across the terrace and pool toward the sea. Keeping that view to yourself for a while could be reason enough to plan the trip. Tree shadows by day, sunset later. There are things to do in the room; they just resist being entered into an itinerary.

If the budget allows, with ocean views and privacy at the top of your list, choose Casa Caracol. The extra spending should go toward the terrace outlook and privacy. Ask what those differences mean for the room you are booking. A category name cannot answer that question, however persuasive it looks on a reservation page.

Be especially particular if you expect to spend long stretches on the terrace or in the private pool. Those are the places where the choice will matter to your day. Give the angle of the view and the privacy the attention they deserve.

If you mainly want a taste of sleeping in the canopy and expect to head out often, Casa Atura is a good fit. Book a room you want to return to. Leave yourself some enthusiasm for going out, too.

The Bathroom Has Its Own Ideas

The treehouse idea takes an interesting turn in the bathroom. Black marble twin sinks sit on an industrial iron frame. Outside the glass are treetops; inside, stone and metal bring weight and firmer lines. A rainforest setting can still leave room for very deliberate interiors. The appeal is in that combination.

The enormous gong and reflecting pool at the arrival area also invite a closer look. The sea has not been given all the interesting details. There is something to notice before you start considering the horizon.

Stay in the room toward evening and the arrangement becomes simple: the bed faces the sea, the private pool sits on the terrace, and its water can catch the sunset colors. Leave that part of the itinerary blank. If I start assigning time slots for doing nothing, the advisor has probably taken the job a little too far.

Let Dinner Take Its Time

Save time separately for a cliffside dinner. The main restaurant sits at the top of the cliff, with tables between two great trees and an infinity pool facing the sea. The position of the table is already a reason to slow the meal down. Give yourself time to look beyond what is on it.

For a drink, there is a margarita made with Volcán Blanco and finished with a Tajín rim. Arrange dinner around sunset and you have the prospect of beginning in daylight and staying as evening turns to night. The setting gives that stretch of time a purpose without requiring much of a plan.

Once the woven lanterns are lit, warm light falls across the tables while the sea and jungle darken beyond. The attraction is the time you might want to spend there. Dinner can be finished before you feel ready to leave the table.

The private pool and the restaurant both make a claim on the evening. Apparently, a holiday can have scheduling problems even when very little is scheduled. Keep the outings lighter and reserve dinner ahead. Then let the meal take the time you came here to give it.

Keep the Cove Casual

The cove can be less considered. Wine-red loungers, white umbrellas and gentle surf make a simple case for switching off. After choosing the room so carefully, leaving it might seem a little wasteful. But a holiday should have moments when even the precise angle of the sea stops being a question.

Stay beneath a white umbrella if that is what appeals. The treehouse you chose does not require constant attendance. You can enjoy the room without treating every hour away from it as a missed opportunity.

Put the Season on the Calendar

High season runs from December to April. I recommend arranging the stay at least two months ahead. May to November is the rainy season, with lower rates. If the ocean view, private pool and cliffside dinners are your reasons for coming, do not let the lower rate decide the season by itself.

The drive from Puerto Vallarta airport, PVR, takes about an hour. Transfers can be arranged ahead. Settle that practical part before arrival and leave the less structured parts of the holiday alone.

Start With How You Want to Stay

This hotel suits travelers who want to spend time in their room, linger over a cliffside dinner and idle at the cove. Ask directly about privacy in an all-glass room. If a particular room category is central to the holiday, book it. Do not leave that decision to a possible complimentary upgrade.
