Hyatt Regency: The Ocean, with the City Close By

I want the city close to the beach. That is Waikiki’s appeal for me: an unwillingness to choose. Looking at the ocean belongs on holiday. So do finding somewhere to eat and heading out for a walk.

A high-floor ocean-view room at Hyatt Regency fits that idea. Waves and sand are below, light catches the water farther out, and Diamond Head enters the picture. There is depth to the view and somewhere to go beyond it. Just imagining coffee on the balcony before deciding what to do makes me leave room in the budget.

Choose What Is Outside the Window

The room needs careful choosing here. Some Waikiki rooms face streets; others face buildings. Picking the hotel leaves another decision unfinished. If the coastline is the reason for coming, ask about the outlook before studying the decor.

The appeal of a high floor is the view opening up. But “high floor” alone does not tell you what you will see. Be specific about the ocean view, floor and balcony. “A nice view” leaves too much unsaid.

On a first visit to Honolulu, you may want to explore and still leave time unplanned. Coming back to a room used only for sleep can feel like ending the afternoon early. Something you want to see outside gives the pause a purpose.

Breakfast First, Plans Later

Breakfast is settled; going out can wait until after it. This arrangement included a buffet with fruit, salads and hot dishes. Whether traveling with children or as a couple, skipping the breakfast search means a little less time on the phone.

The welcome gift included a handwritten card and chocolates. I like how straightforward that is. Read the card, eat the chocolates. After a long journey, small things can stay small and still be welcome.

Head out afterward or return to the room for a while. Keeping breakfast at the hotel leaves the rest of the morning less prescribed.

Dinner Does Not Need an Encore

Give the room a place in the evening, too. From a high floor, lights trace the coastline, with sea and city in view. Coming back to that after a day out puts the room choice to use.

When planning trips, I can be tempted to add somewhere else after dinner. Here, I would stop. Enjoying the activity below does not require joining it every time.

Consider the hotel’s Japanese restaurant for tuna and sake, then head upstairs for the night view. That saves arranging transport and leaves the evening for dinner and rest. Having restaurant choices should include permission to stop searching.

Useful Extras, Requests Made Early

This arrangement used an advisor-only rate, with the high-floor ocean-view room, breakfast and welcome gift included. The price matched Hyatt’s own website, with benefits added and points and elite nights earned as usual. Already planning on Hyatt Regency? That is a practical reason to book this way.

I can spare us the arithmetic on the chocolates. Choose the room carefully and keep the useful breakfast. Say how much the ocean view matters and whether you want to sit outside.

For seclusion and deep quiet, look toward the North Shore or an area with more of a resort feel. Waikiki has city energy. Accepting that before arrival helps the setting fit the holiday.
