Wharekauhau: A Few Days on the Farm

October Has Lambs, Too
An October travel plan can include lambs born in July and August. Wharekauhau is still a working sheep and cattle farm. The animals have their own business in the pasture, quite apart from anyone’s holiday. That business is part of what draws me here. I’d like to see the farm getting on with its day.
More than three thousand acres stretch from the foot of the Remutaka mountains toward the coast, with Palliser Bay’s black sand beach below the cliffs. The white main house takes its shape from an Edwardian country mansion. Sixteen cottages sit around the pasture, alongside a separate villa. The farm itself can be the destination.

Stay for the Meals as Well
The September and October offer is public: stay three nights and pay for two. Anyone can book it through the hotel’s website. What makes it appealing here is that staying longer also means sitting down to proper meals.
Cottage Suite accommodation already includes nightly pre-dinner drinks and canapés, a nightly multi-course dinner and a daily full country breakfast. The third-night package explicitly includes daily dinners and daily breakfast, too. That gives the extra day a useful shape. There is somewhere to spend it, dinner to return for and breakfast the following morning. The meals are part of the decision.

The Menu Gets Interesting at Wasabi
Wharekauhau grows wasabi and watercress in its own waterways. That catches my attention more readily than a general claim about fresh ingredients. It leaves me curious about what the kitchen does with them. Add estate lamb, wild pāua from the coast and fruit and vegetables from the kitchen garden, and dinner begins to connect with the place around it.
There is no formal restaurant. Meals follow the arrangement of a private country house, beginning with pre-dinner drinks and canapés by the fire. Then comes a four-course seasonal menu in the Dining Room, followed by petit fours back at the fireside. Dinner has a beginning and an ending that deserve some space in the evening.
A farmhouse-style light menu offers something less substantial. Breakfast moves to the Country Kitchen, where homemade preserves are among the details that appeal. Eating here is enough of an occasion to put into the holiday plan in its own right.

A Cottage with Its Own Ocean View
For a couple, choose the Cottage Suite. Its 70 square metres include clay tiles, pebble mosaic, wool carpet and an open gas fireplace. Outside is a private ocean-view terrace. Those materials make sense beside a pasture. They give the room a country-house character, with the sea beyond the door.
For families, ask about interconnecting adjoining cottages. That is a practical detail to settle before booking, because how the rooms connect matters as much as what is inside them.
For six people or two families who want to stay together, look at Foley Villa. Its three bedrooms and three bathrooms accommodate six, with a heated infinity pool and an outdoor fireplace outside. Start with how you want to spend time together. If sharing a house is part of the holiday, the villa has a clear purpose; if you are travelling as a couple, the cottage is the straightforward choice.

See How the Farm Spends Its Day
The four-wheel-drive farm tour includes working dogs moving sheep. For a longer outing, the two-hour quad bike tour crosses paddocks and riverbeds before reaching Palliser Bay’s black sand beach. Back at the estate, the Wellness Barn has an indoor pool, sauna and ice bath. Hauora Spa is another option.
The estate and the bay both sit within the Wairarapa International Dark Sky Reserve, giving the evening possibilities of its own. Stargazing still depends on the weather. Strong winds can disrupt outdoor activities as well, so leave the schedule some flexibility.

Write Down What You Want to Taste
Martinborough is a thirty to forty-five minute drive from the estate. Pinot Noir is the main draw, and wine country deserves time set aside for it.
The package with transfers visits The Runholder, the restaurant and tasting room at Te Kairanga, which also represents Martinborough Vineyard. Both wineries belong to the Foley family, who also own Wharekauhau. If Ata Rangi, Dry River or Palliser Estate are on your list, give them a separate place in the itinerary. Let the wines you want to taste determine the day.
Set the Dates, Then Send the Requests
For October, choose the stay-three-pay-two offer. If you can travel in November and want activities settled in advance, consider the four-night Country Hideaway. Give the farm and wine country their own time, with enough space around dinner to enjoy it.
Before booking, I’ll pass your Cottage Suite location or connecting-room requests to the hotel and reserve the dinners that need advance arrangements. I’ll also make sure the confirmation spells out breakfast, benefits, the cancellation deadline and prepayment. I pass your requests to the hotel before arrival.
The third-night offer applies to Cottage Suite accommodation and excludes Foley Villa. The cancellation policy and whether Virtuoso benefits can be combined with the offer still need written confirmation.

Want October availability and the terms in writing?
Have Jay ask Wharekauhau See live rates for WharekauhauThis article quotes no room rates. As checked on 27 September 2026, the estate has no property code in the booking system used for this article, and a geographic search centred on Wellington returned thirty-four hotels without it, so no live rate could be pulled and no advisor-versus-public price comparison was made. A few published prices appear on the estate’s own site but are not consistently labelled by currency, so on that basis none of them are quoted here. Offer wording is taken from the estate’s mailing of 22 September 2026: “This September and October, stay three nights and only pay for two”. That mailing gives no booking deadline, room-type restriction, blackout dates or cancellation terms. On the estate’s offers page the same card reads “from April – 31 October” in the headline and “Available May to October” in the terms block; the start months disagree and both point at the end of October. The inclusions listed there are three nights in a Cottage Suite, daily multi-course dinners and daily full country breakfast; the published package specifies a Cottage Suite, so eligibility for Foley Villa would require written confirmation. The offer is published publicly and is not advisor-exclusive. The 2026 Virtuoso reference amenities are daily full breakfast for two per bedroom, a USD 100 equivalent in-house credit (not combinable, not valid against the room rate, no cash value if unused), a further USD 100 on Foley Villa bookings, a property tour on stays of seven nights or more, and early check-in and late check-out subject to availability; this property does not offer room upgrades. Whether those amenities combine with this offer is not stated anywhere and must be confirmed in writing. MICHELIN Keys, the Cuisine Good Food Awards, the dark sky certification, climate, lambing and shearing seasons, and Martinborough vineyard ownership were checked against public sources as of September 2026.
