Christmas at The Stafford London: An Old House Still Living

What Earlier Guests Left Behind
Part of the appeal of an old house is wondering how people once lived there. The Stafford London offers a pleasingly informal clue: ties and caps left by guests hang from the American Bar’s ceiling. After enough handsome hotel interiors, someone’s old hat can be the thing that makes you curious. Who left it? The bar has carried its name since the 1930s. During the Second World War, American and Canadian officers gathered here.
Spend Christmas in a house like this and there are old stories to go with the festivities. The hotel stands at the end of St James’s Place. Turn south off Piccadilly and walk about three minutes to a house built in 1700. In December, darkness arrives around four, and the courtyard lights take over from daylight.

The Cellar Still Sets a Table
The history continues underground. The seventeenth-century wine cellar served as an air-raid shelter during the Second World War; today, it hosts private dinners, with bottles lining the wall behind the table. Sitting down to eat offers a closer acquaintance with an old house than reading a plaque. This part of its history is still in use.
Upstairs, daily life carries on. Rooms vary in shape and size. Some have terraces, and family rooms and connecting rooms are available. Traveling with family, start with how everyone will sleep. The photographs can follow.
Reception, concierge, room service and the fitness center operate around the clock. In-room coffee and tea carry no extra charge. Green Park and Buckingham Palace can fill the daylight hours, followed by the Regent Street and Bond Street Christmas lights. Leave a gap in the itinerary. The hotel has something to do with it.

An Old House with a New Menu
The festive menus bring the house firmly into the present. Michael Caines took over its culinary direction in 2025 and relaunched The Game Bird as Michael Caines at The Stafford that autumn. The hotel’s website lists One MICHELIN Star. Festive dining is open to non-residents, so a meal can be your introduction to the place.
Festive Afternoon Tea runs from 16 November to 31 December, and £105 includes a glass of Champagne. Alongside seasonal pastries and freshly baked scones comes a useful comparison: it costs less than the Ritz’s Champagne-inclusive tea and Claridge’s weekday tea without Champagne. If the aim is to add some Christmas spirit to a London trip, I’d choose afternoon tea. It leaves more room in the budget.
Christmas Day lunch on 25 December costs £305 per person, from canapés on arrival through to coffee and mince pies. That deserves a pause before booking. But most restaurants, shops and supermarkets across Britain close that day. London’s Tube, buses, Overground and Elizabeth line stop entirely, while National Rail is essentially suspended. Stay here and lunch, at least, requires no transport.
On 26 December, brunch can come before Bond Street. New Year’s Eve offers a fuller evening: a seven-course tasting menu, live music and dancing, then Champagne and fireworks at midnight on the Park Suite Terrace. If you want to make an occasion of it, leave the evening to the hotel.

Breakfast Makes the Benefits Count
If your calendar is flexible, mid-to-late November makes sense. The lights are up and festive afternoon tea has begun. Some of the pleasures of Christmas are available well before the day itself.
Even so, on the dates I checked, the Classic Room total for 24–26 December was £1,779, just 2.2% above early December. Staying over Christmas was less of a leap than I had expected.
Virtuoso matched the public Best Flexible Rate, adding English breakfast and a food and beverage credit. A public promotional rate was also available at 10% less. If breakfast and meals at the hotel are already in your plans, count the benefits. If you head straight out to eat and return only to sleep, take the public promotion. Booking another meal just to use a credit is an oddly elaborate way to save.
Match the Room to the Restaurant Reservation
The old house has practical limits. Guest rooms and public areas last underwent an overall refurbishment in 2011. There are two elevators, and no pool or spa. If you want the space of a new hotel or a full set of resort facilities, look elsewhere.
If this is your kind of place, check availability for the meal you want before arranging the stay. Rooms and tables require separate reservations. That matters particularly on Christmas Day: a bedroom upstairs does not secure the lunch you came for.
With children or parents, discuss family rooms, connecting rooms and dining numbers together. Take your time choosing the photographs you like. How everyone sleeps and eats belongs in the same plan.
Book the Christmas You Want
The Stafford suits travelers who treat walking and eating as proper parts of a holiday. Beyond the parks, palace and shopping streets, leave time for the hotel itself. That is how this old house earns its place in the trip.
Before booking, get written confirmation of the New Year’s Eve Gala total, drinks arrangements, any terrace supplement and Christmas lunch pricing for children. The dining credit excludes the American Bar. Another benefit description specifies lunch or dinner for two instead, so clarify that in writing too. The refundable room rates discussed are not prepaid, allow cancellation one day before arrival and require no deposit. Upgrades on arrival remain subject to availability.
I pass your requests to the hotel before arrival.
I’ll re-price your dates and compare advisor, public and promotional rates. Before booking, I’ll pass your room preferences and arrival time to the hotel. I’ll make sure the confirmation spells out breakfast, benefits, the cancellation deadline and prepayment terms, and book the restaurants and transfers you need. Before arrival, I’ll re-check which facilities are open and follow up any upgrade request. Coming only for lunch on 25 December? Arrange your car ahead too.
