Passalacqua Lake Como: Is it worth it, and which room should you book?

Passalacqua is a hotel with 24 rooms in Moltrasio on Lake Como, spread across three restored buildings and seven acres of gardens leading to a private jetty. I would book it for a stay built around the house, gardens, meals and boat trips. The hotel, restaurant and grounds are reserved for staying guests. If your itinerary keeps you out all day, I would spend the accommodation budget elsewhere.

What does a stay cost, and does Virtuoso save money?

The three May 2027 room options I checked have exactly matching Virtuoso and public rates, with breakfast included in both.

  • King Bedroom: EUR 7,260 total. Palazz, 400 sqft, courtyard view, breakfast included. Quoted 13 October 2026 for 17 to 20 May 2027: 3 nights, 1 room, 2 adults, including taxes.
  • Villa: EUR 8,910 total. Main villa, 430 sqft, village view, breakfast included. Quoted 13 October 2026 for 17 to 20 May 2027: 3 nights, 1 room, 2 adults, including taxes.
  • Grand Room: EUR 11,550 total. 430 sqft, lake view, breakfast included; building unspecified. Quoted 13 October 2026 for 17 to 20 May 2027: 3 nights, 1 room, 2 adults, including taxes.

There is no hidden lower price in these three comparisons. Virtuoso adds a resort credit equivalent to USD 100, plus room upgrades, early check-in and late check-out, all subject to availability. Breakfast is already in the public rate.

Can you cancel, and is a deposit required?

All three May quotes require a credit card guarantee, with no prepayment, and allow free cancellation before the deadline 22 days prior to arrival.

The Virtuoso terms require a deposit and different cancellation conditions for reservations over 30K (the terms do not name a currency; the rates are in euros). Before confirming, I would have the hotel put the deposit amount, payment date, refund conditions and cancellation deadline in writing.

Which building should you book?

I would choose the Villa for the historic house, the Palazz when the main building matters less, and Casa al Lago for a room close to the water.

The Villa has 12 rooms. Its standard double rooms average 40 square metres; doubles explicitly sold with a lake view average 50 square metres. I lean toward this building for someone who wants to sleep in the old villa. The village-view room in the quote is in this building.

Suite Bellini measures 250 square metres and includes the music room with its two levels and surrounding balustrade.

The Palazz has eight rooms in the former stables behind the Villa. Standard rooms average 37 square metres; Grand Room in the Palazz averages 50. The courtyard room is the lower quote of the three.

Casa al Lago has four rooms by the lake and can be booked for exclusive use. Room al Lago averages 30 square metres, Grand Room al Lago 40 and Junior Suite al Lago 60. At 30 square metres, the standard room here is the smallest category on the estate.

The Grand Room in the quote is listed at 430 sqft with a lake view; the quote does not say which building it is in.

When should you go, and where is it?

Passalacqua closes from early January to early March; May is where I would start checking for a trip centred on the pool and boats, while autumn and early winter suit plans involving fireplaces, books and wine.

The hotel is in Moltrasio on Lake Como’s southwestern branch, about an hour by car from Milan and 15 minutes from Como. The old town is outside the gates, including Gelateria Le Giuggiole for ice cream.

On 13 October 2026, inventory for 13 to 16 September 2027 had not yet opened. That empty result did not mean sold out. The search for 26 to 29 October 2026 returned suites only.

What would make you stay at the hotel all afternoon?

I would stay for the gardens, the pool and a meal in the house. The villa dates to 1787; Bellini composed La Sonnambula during a stay in 1831. The De Santis family bought it in 2018, undertook a restoration lasting three years and opened Passalacqua in June 2022. On The World’s 50 Best Hotels list it ranked No. 1 in the inaugural 2023 edition, No. 2 in 2024, No. 4 in 2025 and No. 5 in 2026, and it holds Three MICHELIN Keys.

The outdoor pool occupies a terrace below the Villa, overlooking the lake, with climbing roses, a bay tree and parasols shaped like lily petals.

The nearby Winter Garden is a former greenhouse converted into an all-day bar, designed by JJ Martin of La DoubleJ. I would stop here for a drink after swimming.

The kitchen garden sits beside a bocce court and an old grape pergola. Guests can pick fruit and herbs themselves and collect the chickens’ freshly laid eggs.

The spa is on the Palazz’s ground floor. Beneath the gardens, Sottoterra uses a passage dating to the eighteenth century for its sauna, steam room and heated indoor pool. Private use can be reserved before or after regular hours. Seasonal daily activities are included with every stay; tunnel tours and gelato classes are two examples.

Should you eat in, or head out on the lake?

I would keep breakfast and one dinner at the hotel, then plan a boat outing on another day, with a picnic aboard if you want lunch on the water.

Chef Viviana Varese’s menus focus on fresh, seasonal Italian cooking. Breakfast is laid out in the kitchen, with cakes, croissants, Parma ham and an island devoted to eggs cooked to order. Dinner can be on a candlelit terrace or in the Sala Ovale, beneath frescoed gods and goddesses.

Boat excursions can take you to Bellagio, Varenna, Como or the gardens of Villa del Balbianello. The vintage Giumello II suits a slow outing or sunset cruise. The kitchen can prepare a picnic basket for the boat.

Who should skip Passalacqua, and what would I arrange?

I would steer a traveller elsewhere if the stay is just a late arrival and an early departure, or if the room only works with a complimentary upgrade.

For a booking I handle, I would confirm the building and outlook, request upgrades and flexible arrival or departure, and follow up on the hotel’s response. I would also agree the boat, departure time, route and picnic with the hotel, then check which included activities run during your stay.

Other hotels around the lake are on the Como city page.

Stay rates are checked again. Event places, dining and other services require a separate enquiry unless explicitly included.

This button prices rooms only. Boats, private dinners and booking Sottoterra for yourselves are arranged separately once the room is held.

Rates are live pulls taken on 13 October 2026, on one basis throughout: one room, two adults, euros, total after tax, for 17 to 20 May 2027 (three nights). The bookable price is whatever the live pull returns at the time of booking. Advisor (Virtuoso) and public rates returned the same number in all three categories, and both include breakfast; Virtuoso amenities sit on top of the price, with upgrades and early check-in or late checkout subject to availability and the USD 100 equivalent credit not applicable to the room rate. All three rates are refundable to 22 days before arrival, guaranteed by card with no prepayment; the rate terms state that reservations over 30,000 (euros) require a deposit and carry a different cancellation policy. History, room sizes, gardens, dining and activities come from the hotel's website (consulted October 2026); list rankings and MICHELIN Keys were verified against public sources.
