New York · Manhattan · The St. Regis vs The Ritz-Carlton NoMad
Christmas in New York: Fifth Avenue or a Higher View?

Beyond the Christmas Postcard
The tree, the shop windows, Fifth Avenue: New York’s Christmas postcard has already chosen the pictures for us. Booking a hotel leaves a more interesting choice. Do you stay close to that scene, or look at it from a different height? Both have their appeal. They suggest rather different holidays.
The St. Regis New York puts Fifth Avenue outside the door. Saks lights its façade at five in the evening, with a show every ten minutes until eleven at night. The Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad has Nubeluz, 500 feet above the ground. After seeing New York from the street, the prospect of watching the city spread out below is difficult to dismiss.

Old New York, with the Right Beds
St. Regis has the formal bearing of old New York. It suits a holiday you feel like dressing up for. Built with the backing of John Jacob Astor IV, the hotel opened in 1904; its guestrooms and suites completed their renovation in 2026. You can appreciate its age and still take the updated rooms seriously. History is part of the pleasure here.
With children, look at the Deluxe: 450 square feet, two double beds and a maximum occupancy of four. For a couple, the Guest Room offers 430 square feet, a king bed and butler service. These are practical distinctions beneath the grand address. A Christmas trip can have a sense of occasion. Everyone should still have a suitable place to sleep.

Leave Some Time for Old King Cole
Maxfield Parrish’s original Old King Cole mural in King Cole Bar is another reason I put St. Regis on the shortlist. Christmas may bring you to New York, but the itinerary can hold something beyond the seasonal sights. Leave a little time for the painting. A hotel becomes more interesting when there is something inside you actively want to see.
The former Astor Court space now houses The Drawing Room and La Maisonette. Breakfast is available at La Maisonette or through in-room dining. If the morning does not need an immediate departure, you can let it begin at the hotel.
Keep these walks in mind: about 5–7 minutes to Saks and Rockefeller Center, and about 4–5 minutes to the southern edge of Central Park. Go out, return to your room for another layer, then head to dinner. That is a useful way to put the address to work.

At NoMad, Start with Dinner
NoMad’s appeal can begin with a restaurant reservation. José Andrés’s Zaytinya and Bazaar Meat are both in the hotel, and Nubeluz could follow dinner. For travelers who plan a holiday around where to eat, those names give the hotel a place in the conversation before the room comparison even begins. Start with the evening you would like to have.
Then consider the room. The design takes its cues from the neighboring Flower District. Floor-to-ceiling windows give the downtown skyline room to unfold in higher room categories. The restaurants help decide where you spend the evening; the outlook may decide how much time you want to spend upstairs afterward. That is a persuasive combination if the hotel itself is part of your plans.
Daily breakfast for two is at Zaytinya. The credit for eligible spending can be used at restaurants, the spa, in-room dining, the lobby bar and the minibar. If you expect to eat and relax at the hotel, those benefits have natural places to go.

My Budget Goes to NoMad
Comparing entry rooms, I choose NoMad. On the dates I checked, it was 31.5% less expensive than St. Regis. If Fifth Avenue is a stop to see the lights, the remaining budget gives you room to compare higher-floor categories and plan restaurant visits. That suits my idea of this trip.
For the same dates and entry categories, Virtuoso and public rates matched. Booking through an advisor adds daily breakfast for two, a food and beverage credit and a welcome amenity at St. Regis. NoMad also includes breakfast and a credit for eligible spending.
Use those benefits within the holiday you already want. Breakfast has a clear role; a credit depends on where you intend to spend time. I can make a booking comparison complicated enough without turning the holiday into homework.
Some Trips Belong on Fifth Avenue
The NoMad entry rooms checked here accommodate a maximum of two guests. A family of three or more needs a fresh search. Higher-floor views also require confirmation of the category and orientation. A photograph does not assign its window to your booking. St. Regis’s Deluxe likewise needs repricing with the children’s number and ages included.
If the tree, shop windows and Central Park shape the whole trip, stay focused on Fifth Avenue. The price difference alone is a poor reason to move. And if a particular suite matters, book it directly. An upgrade wish is still a wish.
Get the Room and the Terms Clear
For a higher-floor stay at NoMad, include the Manhattan Room in the comparison. Before booking, I pass bed, floor and view requests to the hotel. I make sure the confirmation spells out breakfast, eligible credit uses, the cancellation deadline and whether prepayment is required. I can also book the restaurants you want ahead of arrival. The details belong in the reservation.
Both hotels’ refundable rates have a cancellation deadline three days before arrival. The NoMad Manhattan Room rate discussed here is prepaid. It is refundable within approximately 24 hours after booking and non-refundable afterward. NoMad early check-in and late check-out requests must be made 72 hours in advance and remain subject to availability.
Upgrades on arrival are subject to availability at both hotels. At NoMad, they exclude NoMad Suite, Ritz-Carlton Suite and all penthouses. Neither hotel’s Virtuoso benefits can be combined with other promotions.
Want both hotels priced side by side for your dates, amenities included?
See live rates for The St. Regis New York See live rates for The Ritz-Carlton NoMadRates are live pulls from the booking system on 25 September 2026 for 18–20 December 2026, two nights, two adults, in US dollars with taxes included; both hotels were priced on the same dates, the same occupancy, and the same refundable, non-prepaid basis. Per-night figures are the total divided by the number of nights, an arithmetic conversion rather than a quote; the rate at booking and the full terms govern. On this search the advisor rate equalled the public rate in the entry-room category quoted; amenities are separate, and upgrades, early check-in and late check-out are subject to availability on the day. Neither $100 amenity credit applies to room rate, taxes, gratuities or third-party services, and neither refunds an unused balance. The St. Regis quote line shows a USD 100 destination fee already included in its total; the NoMad line carries no such fee. Neither hotel has published prices, booking windows or stay windows for its holiday programming, and per the stated terms those offers are for new reservations only, require advance booking, and do not combine with other promotions; whether they can sit alongside Virtuoso amenities is subject to written confirmation from the hotel. Destination details (Bryant Park Winter Village dates, the Saks light show, December temperatures) were checked against public sources as of September 2026; Rockefeller Center has not announced a 2026 tree lighting date.
