Christmas Away: Where Do You Want to Spend Your Time?

Put the Room on the Itinerary

Some holidays ask very little of a room beyond somewhere to sleep. This Christmas, I want to put it on the itinerary. Book a water villa, and there should be time for its pool and dining gazebo. Stay in a Viennese palace, and an evening of rooftop mulled wine belongs in the plans.

So let the sightseeing wait a moment. The Maldives, Vienna and Amsterdam each offer a different reason to slow down. Think about the days you want to have. Choosing the hotel becomes much easier once you can picture how you would actually use it.

Give the Water Villa Your Day

Being able to get into the ocean whenever the mood takes you is reason enough to travel to the Maldives. Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi spreads across three private islands, a 45-minute yacht ride from Velana airport. For this kind of holiday, easy access to the water is the point.

The King Overwater Villa with Pool has a private pool, a wide deck, a dining gazebo and direct ocean access. You could leave the sightseeing list blank. Eating, swimming and spending time in the villa would all count as proper plans. That is how I would make sense of the spending: give yourself time to use what you have booked.

On the dates I checked, the advisor-only rate matched the public Flexible Rate, and both included breakfast. Booking through Virtuoso added a hotel credit per stay. At the same room price, that is a useful addition to a stay you already want.

The Maldives Has an Interior, Too

For another water villa option, look at JOALI Maldives and its Water Villa with Pool. The advisor-only rate was US$9.01 above the public Best Available Rate, with a 30-minute spa treatment for two and a US$150 food and beverage credit per stay. If a spa treatment was already in your plans, this is an easy rate to choose.

But among these island stays, I prefer Soneva Fushi. Its beachfront villas sit among dense foliage in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. There is an observatory and an open-air cinema. I like the idea of travelling to an island and wanting to spend time exploring its interior.

That gives the holiday a different shape. The sea can be the reason for going without a villa over the water being the room you want. On the dates I checked, Soneva Fushi offered only public Best Available Rate options. The beachfront villas, greenery and things to do on the island already make the case. Choose it because that is how you want to spend your days.

In Vienna, the Festivities Follow You Back

If Christmas trees and mulled wine are part of what you would miss by going away, Vienna makes sense. The Ritz-Carlton, Vienna occupies four historic palaces on the Ringstrasse. Its festive collaborator, J. & L. Lobmeyr, is a Viennese crystal house with nearly two centuries behind it.

The Christmas Suite brings a decorated tree, welcome gifts and seasonal amenities into the room. Upstairs, the Winter Terrace at Atmosphere Rooftop Bar looks out over the illuminated city. Goulash, Buchteln, punch and mulled wine are on the menu. Leave an evening for this. You can spend the day seeing Vienna and come back with more of the holiday still ahead.

Be precise when choosing the room. The advisor-only rate with daily breakfast for two at Dstrikt applies to a Deluxe Guest Room. The Christmas Suite is a separate selection. If the decorated tree is what draws you here, keep that room distinction in view while booking. It is an appealing detail, but it needs to belong to the room on your confirmation.

Let the Canals Set the Pace

Amsterdam suits a holiday built around walking, with the hotel as your starting point. Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam stands between two canals. Its history runs from a 15th-century convent through royal lodgings, Admiralty headquarters and the City Hall. The building gives you plenty to read about before heading out.

Mark the Amsterdam Light Festival dates: 26 November to 17 January. Light installations line the canals, and you can see them on foot or by boat. Here, the appeal extends naturally into the city. Leave time for the waterways and decide how you want to follow them.

With the third night free, the Superior Queen Room advisor-only rate was 1,743.22 euros for four nights, 26.9% below the public refundable room-only rate and also below public Stay Longer and Save. This is a straightforward choice on price. I would still re-price your dates against the public and promotional rates before booking.

Stay Longer Because You Want To

For the islands, start with how long you can stay. JOALI Maldives and Soneva Fushi have Christmas minimum-stay requirements on the dates I checked. At Soneva Fushi, the same 360-square-metre double-storey villa with a private pool cost less per night for ten nights, from 20 to 30 December, than for seven nights.

That is helpful if you want the extra days. It is less persuasive if you are already happy with a shorter holiday. My calculator is quite willing to extend a trip; it does not have to take the time off. Decide whether you want to stay longer before letting the nightly rate make the decision.

Book the Things You Want to Do

Vienna also has the Gondola Experience: Swiss raclette in heated gondola cabins on the rooftop. That can be arranged ahead. The advisor-only room rate costs more than public Stay and Save on a room-only basis, so choose it when you expect to use the breakfast and benefits.

The original four-night or seven-night Maldives options have passed their free-cancellation deadlines; plan on them being non-refundable. The Soneva Fushi ten-night option allows cancellation up to 30 days before arrival, with 20 November as the deadline. The Vienna and Amsterdam advisor-only rates described here allow cancellation up to one day before arrival. The Christmas Suite runs only through 30 December. Amsterdam has additional local taxes and fees, subject to hotel confirmation.

Before booking, I pass your room-type, view and arrival-time requests to the hotel. I make sure the confirmation spells out breakfast, credits, the cancellation deadline and prepayment requirements. I book the restaurants and spa appointments you want, then re-check open facilities before arrival. I also request and follow up on upgrades, early check-in and late check-out. These remain subject to availability.
